Our fall fishing

Great catfish hole on Tn. River lots of fish have been caught right here
Although I haven't been able to go fishing this fall because of many different reasons the fishing has been very good some of the one's we know that are fishing are having very good luck I have seen great catches in crappie ,bass and catfish one couple I know caught a 43# white cat which if I heard it right one of them fell out the boat over which turned out to be pretty funny although he said he slipped  but if your in a small flat bottom boat and you pull in something that size it is going to flop around and it is like having  another person in the boat and if you stand up it can just pitch you right over the side . Always remember in smaller boats especially to be very careful and always were live vests , they make some very nice ones to fish in that are not big and bulky or orange these vest cost a little more but are worth it. When on the water one never knows what may happen accidents happen in seconds not in minutes and you always need to be ready and be safe, and then have fun the fish are just waiting for your hook so go get them.www.fishingpoleracks.com
Always keep your fishing poles ready and never keep the fish waiting

fishing is all that matters

You know some times we make terrible choices  while we are fishing ,we go to this sweet little hole to crappie and bass fish it is all shallow and there is an enormous amount of cover so the fish do very well there . It has several small lakes tied together by these little shoot I mean they are connected but its less than 50 yards between them the front lake wasn't doing to well this day so we went to the back and fished there for a couple of hours and was catching a few nice crappie it was a nice early summer day and mostly cloudy and had sprinkled on us a couple of time we decided not to leave but to go to the truck and get the rain gear out and keep on fishing. When we got to the boat ramp there was another fellow there fishing at the ramp and he was getting ready to leave he ask us if we were staying and we told him that we were and he decided if we were so was he ,we told him that we figured it would just sprinkle of and on and the fish was biting and we intended to make the most of this.We got our gear out and took our small boat back to the back were we had been ,in this lake you are down in a hole so to speak there are hills around you that block your view of any weather that is coming then out of the west a very dark cloud started over the hill and we decided it would probably just sprinkle and slide around us we couldn't"t see the hole picture a couple of minutes later it started raining and i mean raining you couldn't"t see the banks you could just barely see the front of the boat and it was less than 12' away we cranked the boat and went straights across the lake to the bank and it was still raining like crazy it did this for about 20 minutes and quit  we had to bail the boat out this is a very small boat 12' with a 4.5 horse mercury motor no pumps this is a boat we used to fish here and other sloughs in the area that you need just a small boat and this on was 3/4 full of rain water we finally made it back to the ramp and there sat that man that was fishing there in his truck he waited to see if we made it in he said he was about ready to find someone that he was about convinced we had been sunk, and it got close.  If he happens to read this post i would like to thank him for waiting to see that we were OK, the great thing about your fellow fisherman is that they care and are always willing to help one another if in trouble and we never know when that will happen .But just don't ask about our secret hole you won't get a straight answer.Of coarse after we got home we had a mess all of our gear was full of water and grit and it all had to be cleaned and put up so that next time we would be ready to try again.

Jug Fish'n

Jug fish'n can be some of the best fun you have ever had there probably a lot of different ways to do this but we will talk about the way I have done this I like to use one gallon milk jugs the plastic ones with the screw on lids not the snap on ,if you use the snap on's when you get a fish on and he takes the jug under it can pop the lid off and there you go the jug can fill up and you lose that fish and jug, these jugs need to be bright in color and is good to number them this is why we like white milk jugs you can see them from a little distance the numbers insure you get them all back ,fish like to take them in to the bushes at times so you have to watch them. The number of jugs varies from state to state so check your fish'n regulations in your area. Tie 120lb test nylon trout- line line on to the handle of the jug check your depth finder to see where the fish are holding at fish don't just  sit on the bottom all the time so you need your hook to be at their level or just above. We bait up with what ever they have been biting on if it has been worms ,hot dogs, skip jack,or even rooster livers it doesn't matter just what ever they are biting on.We like to use about 20 jugs for 2 people that's all you can keep up with any way.Now its time for the fun you are rigged with a jug line bait and a good hook of the size you prefer don't get to big but needs to be a good one I think we use about a 2/0 hook ,we forgot to talk about the sinker this depends on the water you are fishing if it has current it takes a little more I like to use enough to keep the bait down but leave the jug laying down so it works like a bobber when it stands up your getting a bite, now turn them loose let them start floating off don't put them all in one place scatter them in a reachable area and wait you can be fishing with a pole while you wait but when the action starts you may not have time you will chase jugs all day and it may not sound like fun but wait until you get the first one in you will be hooked your self .
Primarily we use this method for catfish'n some use dough balls for carp but we never bait with a bait to catch bass or crappie, this is not permitted in some areas and we consider it a unsportsman like method for catching true game fish, although you can not control what may bite a hook please if you catch something that is not right practice catch and release one needs to do this as much as possible any way although we all need a mess of fish every now and then, after all that's part of why we fish.

In the fall season

In the fall of the year we have start getting our poles and tackle stored for the winter this is the time when we need to remember how important it is to maintain all of it we have all winter to get our line changed and our reels cleaned and lubed just like any other mechanical item it requires lubrication .We need to recheck pole eyes making sure they are all still good to do this I like to use a cotton ball just put it against the eye and gently rotate and then pull it away slowly if it pulls the cotton the eye could fray your line also look at each one and make sure that there are no groves cut into them since most eyes are ceramic there aren't as many problems as there used to be although you can replace them.make sure that you clean the poles this may not make them fish any better but it does make them look better. This brings up the next issue what to do with your poles while not in use alot of us that fish , hunt in the winter and fish in the rest of the year. I always used to like to see a room like a hunting lodge they always have a warmth to them but times are not like they used to be when we could hang our guns on the wall to show them off now we have to have a safe to lock them into and keep our kids out and theifs abay , but our fishing poles can still be displayed on the wall or in racks that can roll you can get fishing pole racks in a rustic look or modern that will match almost any room and so far i haven't heard of any one holding up the neighborhood store with a stolen fishing pole but the way the world is nothing would surprise me ,but as for now we can proudly display our poles in a nice fishing pole rack and keep them up where they are safe for the winter and ready to go this spring .

Early Fall Fishing

Some of or best fishing of the year is in the fall when our weather cooperates and the wind is right our fish don't bite well when the wind is out of the north and the water can be bad rough it just makes for a day they ain't so great but when all is right the fish bite and you can catch limit of crappie and the bass will still get after it and fight like it was still summer our water is warm for a while and gets to be just right for a good time. very cold water is not good for a lot of species of fish they don't eat for long periods because they just don't metabolize food like they do in warm weather all things slow down in cold water here.I found that in cold water here if the water color is a little mud colored you can run a bright ( I prefer a white one) colored jig and with some very hard work actually convince a bass to bite here and there ,make sure to run jig slower than you would in summer fish respond slower in cold water.

Labor Day

Finally it has come labor day here in our area is a great Holiday it marks the end of the boating season from memorial day to labor day each year we have lots of out of town people here boating fishing and any other water sport you can imagine ,some of these people come from communities around close and some come from farther off they are all welcome and our small community appreciates there business but it is nice to get back to mostly the local fisherman and calmer water even though the Tn. river her is close to 1/2 mile wide in places and 50ft deep in most places it can get small for fisherman in the middle of summer with the jetski'ers and pleasure boaters along with normal barge traffic so it is nice to fish in the early fall our temps. start dropping and the fish start biting it can be really peaceful fishing ,after all it not all about just catching fish it is the experience of each fishing trip you take and the destressing that we get.
Our web site is running a labor day sale on three of our more popular rod racks for the week of labor day drop by our site and look us over and take advantage of the great savings on these.http://www.fishingpoleracks.com/category/106

Our teminolgy, our sites,fishing

A lot of what I will be talking about on here may be called different you have to remember I am in the south and we don't always say things or even call things what you do but through all of this I do hope sometime I will make since and get you to understand what I am talking about. we love to fish and have a great time on the river we will fish for any thing that swims we are not crazy about winter fishing so cant talk to you much about souger fishing although very good to eat I cant hardly get out there when ice is freezing to the line .
By know some of you  probably has noticed I have a link to a web site on some of my posts yes we own a website fishingpoleracks.com it is relatively new online like me at blogging , but we have some great products and some of the best suppliers you can find our prices are reasonable and we would appreciate a visit at any time . This web site also has a blog site http://fishingpoleracks.wordpress.com/ in which we are trying to help you understand the benefits and uses of our racks .I have noticed that a lot of my views are coming from Canada I don't believe that we are shipping to Canada but if you want a rod rack we will find a shipping method we are still learning out of country and overseas shipping .
Our water here is full of summer time boaters and its hard to do any real good fishing in the main river from memorial day through labor day but after this weekend the water is ours again all the water skiers and jet skiers are pretty much gone ,we got so most of our cat fishing was at night and the boaters could have the day and the hot sun,and found we caught  more and it was peace full out there.

Cat fish

Our are has some of the best catfish that I have found anywhere these fish are a cool and for the most part a scavenger, although not all cat fish are scavengers some do prefer live prey and those are my favorite we like to refer to them as flat head or in some instances yellow cats but here another exception a yellow cat does not have to be yellow although most are, there is a mud cat is what I call them which are black in appearance one type of these has a yellow stripe up his side he is a yellow  and is good the mud cat and chug head you don't want ,trust me you don't want these.flat heads or yellow can get huge and are aggressive like a bass.
White cat and channel cat get large as well but normally are not as aggressive all of these are opportunity feeders and eat when they find what looks good to them some of the bait used to catch these can turn the stomach of a  buzzard I mean it can be rough but trust me if you hang into your first 15 pounder the bait and the smell it all becomes worth it .Not all baits are that bad though you can use a verity of worms ,smaller fish, mussel meat ,at times even Ivory soap in bar form so see they aren't that picky .
The time of year helps determine how deep and the temp. it get quite hot here in the summer and they go deep and up against rock bluffs in the cool ,in cooler they can move into shallower water where the flat heads feed on smaller fish . there is no great mystery about these fish the only thing that stops you from catching them is not putting your line in the water so grab your pole and give it a try and even if they don't bite you had a great time.http://www.fishingpoleracks.com

Bass

My all time favorite is to worm fish if all I had to do is bass fish and had endless supply of rubber bait i would be really happy I prefer to run my worms Texas style and on a slow retrieval and the more structure the better . I have been know to fish grass beds in the same manner my patients are usually rewarded by something and as most of us that bass fish will tell you it don't take a big fish to make that heart to pound ,these fish in the spring and summer can be super aggressive and even the small ones can make you think you've caught a whale .
In water that is a little more open I like to pull crank baits and these can really pay off but i have found that a brand new bait don't always catch. I had bought a shiny silver rattle trap to replace one that i had lost and I fished that thing half the day and didn't get a hit at all i was about to change it but i wanted to use it along the side of a pump station first because my other one would usually pay of there , these are large concrete buildings in the watter and i was casting right against the building with it and I hit the concrete several times and scathed the side of my new trap was all upset that i had made these miss casts and cat out away from the building and that bait caught the rest of the day it was unreal brand new and shiny no luck scratched it caught like crazy I am not saying to by a new bait an trash it out and expect it to catch but natural fish in the water are not all new and shiny they have imperfections and the bass know this they are very smart and the more we fish for them them more educated they get.

crappie and bass

One of my favorite spot to crappie and bass fish is a little back water slue that isn't far from here and always makes for a good day out. We normally catch something worth while , if the crappie aren't biting the bass might be we have caught some pretty nice ones here ,and then when you least expect it there is always that surprise that pops up .We were bass fishing on this lake and it was kind of a slow day ,the crappie weren't biting so we were structure fishing for bass and they were making us work for every thing we caught and they were all small. When I hung a hauss  I fought it forever it seemed and finally got it in the boat and there it was the biggest grindle I ever caught it weight 38 lbs.not much to eat but one heck of a lot of fun so it isn't always about the kind of fish we catch its that we caught something and in this case bigger is always better.
For the most part here we like to use a jigg or a shiner minnow for crappie fishing they just tend to work the best in this slue but bass fishing here is a hole other story at times they might hit on almost anything depending on the water clarity, temp ph ect. it is the same here as any were else but my favorite is ether a Texas or a Carolina rigged worm in the summer but that's just me.

spring fishing

Normally in the spring we do a lot of crappie fishing but the past couple of years we haven't been able to the water has been to high when we could go ,or the weather has been just  to windy ,I guess I'm looking for excuses an old fishing buddy of mine always said if your to busy to fish your to darn busy and I guess he was right in the years we fished together he taught me more about fishing than I ever new turns out that its not always about the fish sometimes it about us.
